St Margaret's Church of England Primary School

Asthma Friendly School

St Margaret’s is an accredited Asthma Friendly School.

The programme is led by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) and supports schools to provide safe, consistent care for pupils with asthma.

What is an Asthma Friendly School?

An Asthma Friendly School is one that meets recognised standards set by MFT to ensure children with asthma are supported throughout the school day.

This includes:

  • Having a clear asthma policy and an up-to-date asthma register
  • Ensuring staff are trained in asthma awareness, with a named asthma lead
  • Supporting pupils to use their inhalers safely and correctly
  • Keeping spare emergency inhalers and spacers in school
  • Monitoring inhaler expiry dates
  • Following clear procedures for managing asthma, including emergencies
  • Knowing when to involve parents, carers, or healthcare professionals

Why it matters

Asthma is one of the most common long-term conditions in children in the UK. When it is not well controlled, it can affect attendance, learning, and participation in activities.

By working towards accreditation, St Margaret’s is helping to ensure that all pupils with asthma are safe, supported, and able to take part fully in school life.
