Autumn 1
Our Learning in Autumn 1
In our Read Write Inc lessons, we are learning to read and spell Set 1 and 2 words and beginning to learn Set 3 sounds and words. We are focusing on accuracy and fluency by reading our colour group storybooks more than once during the week. We are improving our writing by writing sentences with punctuation and finger spaces. We are innovating our own ideas based on our storybooks.
In our Pathways to Write lessons, we are exploring Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers which is all about a penguin who gets lost and is helped by a friendly boy. During our lessons we are learning how to use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. We are working towards writing our own version of the story with a new animal!
In our Power Maths lessons, we will be learning all about number 1-10. We will be sorting objects up to this number, writing 1-10 in both numerals and words and counting forwards and backwards to to and from 10. We are also learning how to compare numbers using the =, <, > signs. We will be using resources such as counters, cubes, ten frames and number lines to help us with our learning.
In Science we are learning about the human body. We will identify and name body parts such as head, arms, legs, eyes, ears, mouth, nose and skin. We will learn about each of the senses and their associated body part. We look forward to testing out our sense of taste!
In Design Technology, we will learn how to make a tray! We will take inspiration from the work of Thomas Chippendale and learn how to create a tray including a base, edges and handles. We will learn how to safely use a glue-gun to join the parts of the tray together.
In History, we are learning about what our school was like in the past. We will take a history walk around the school to spot clues about what it used to be like and we will learn about what learning in school was like in the past.
In Art, we are learning about collage and will create a self portrait collage in the style of Lance Letscher. We will develop our cutting skills, learn about primary colours and explore using different media to create collages.
Our Physical Education lessons will focus on athletics. We will develop our running, jumping and throwing skills through a range of games and using various equipment.
In our Computing lessons we will be developing our mouse skills by creating a picture of a tree using paint software. We will also be learning how to type and how to stay safe online.
In Music we will be exploring dynamics and tempo through listening to a range of different songs. We will develop our understanding and use of percussion instruments to accompany familiar songs.
In Religious Education lessons we will learn about belonging. We will learn about how religious people show they belong to their faith community. We will learn about ways babies are welcomed in religions and the promises made at weddings. We will think about their own network of belonging and how we all belong to someone.
In our PSHE lessons we will be learning about healthy lifestyles. We will explore what is meant by a balanced diet as well as learning the proper way to wash our hands and brush our teeth.
In our P4C (Philosophy for Children) lessons, we will create our class code of conduct and
start to explore questions such as "It is more fun to be a grown up or a child?". Throughout our P4C discussions, we will develop our use of the "4Cs" - being caring, creative, collaborative and critical.
