Summer 1
Our Learning in Summer 1
Some fantastic learning will be taking place this half term in Year 1!
We will be focusing on learning our Set 2 and 3 sounds in Phonics and reading lots of new books, following our Read Write Inc scheme. As well as that, we will be practising reading and writing our Year 1 Common Exception Words to help with our fluency and spelling!
In Maths we will be learning to use methods to multiply and divide numbers. We will also be finding halves and quarters of shapes and objects, and solving word problems including fractions. We will look at how to describe the positions of different objects and follow directions.
We are excited about our Art and Design lessons this half term! We will be learning about the life and work of the artist Cezanne. We will be improving our painting skills by practising colour mixing, varying brushstrokes and creating different shades of colour. We will make our own still life arrangements using fruits and draw these with pencils – just like Cezanne’s!
Our topic in Science is ‘Plants’. We will be growing our own bean plants in our classroom and watering them every day as well as updating our Plant diaries. We will visit the school allotment to look at the produce that is growing there. We will label different parts of plants as well as learning about the differences between fruits and vegetables.
In History we will be learning about ‘Inventors and Inventions’ that are significant to Manchester’s history. We will learn about the creations of the Bridgewater Canal, Manchester City and United football teams and Rolls Royce! We will make timelines and look at the similarities and differences and how these inventions have developed over time. We will also visit the Museum of Science and Industry to enrich our learning.
During our P4C lessons we will look at stories and stimuli that help us to think and reflect on people around us and their roles in our community. We will ask questions such as: will we be the same when we grow up? How are families different? Are all jobs important?
In PSHE we will be talking about people who are special to us and about the similarities and differences between people. We will be looking at the NSPCC’s ‘Pantosaurus’ scheme and how to keep ourselves safe.
We will be playing dodgeball in our PE lessons this half term! We will improve our ball skills by practising how to catch, aim, pass and throw with accuracy and power. We are going to be learning how to attack and defend in a match!
Our topic in Design Technology this half term will be ‘Food Technology’. We will taste-test fruits and describe their flavours using vocabulary such as sweet, sour, bitter and juicy! Then, we will cut and slice the fruits in order to make our final product – a delicious fruit salad!
