Autumn 1
Our Learning in Autumn 1
This year, we will be using the Power Maths scheme to boost pupils' attainment. The first textbook, 6A, covers place value and calculation. For English, we will both read and write for modern fiction and myths, in order to improve children's vocabulary and phrase structure.
We will learn about South America in-depth, through a variety of subjects. Geography will cover rainforests and the human settlements of Brazil, accompanied by an writing unit on newspaper reports. In music, we are learning to play samba rhythms using both body percussion and traditional instruments. We will also be making an instrument in DT, by studying the work of Leo Rojas and creating our own sets of pan pipes from wood!
PE will teach us capoeira: part dance, part martial-art. We will learn basic principles and moves, culminating in paired and shared routines to be performed and recorded. In science we are learning about classification systems, before investigating conditions for fungal and microbial growth.
Benin is another country we will focus on this half term. In history, we will learn about the formation of the Benin Kingdom, and its technological prowess compared to contemporary European civilisations. Computing puts this learning to good use - the children will create their own Benin craft guild websites.
Our modern foreign language is Spanish - we will recap the learning of colours and learn how to talk about clothes. For RE, we will be investigating the views of different religions on death. The children will learn basic finances in PSHE, as well as different systems of government. Our P4C sessions will draw stimuli from a range of lesson over this half term, all selected to develop the children's enquiry skills.
