Year 1 Meet the Teacher
Phonics Screening Check
The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check takes place in June every year. Please see the attached letter for more information.
Below is our resource pack for you to practise at home with your child. Please support your child to read the real and alien words.
PE lessons
For PE lessons, the children will wear a white t-shirt and black shorts (or leggings/jogging trousers). They need to wear trainers as for some topics we have PE outdoors . For indoor PE, they will take off their shoes and socks, so please can they wear shoes that they can take off and put back on themselves. Long hair needs to be tied back and jewellery (necklaces, earrings, bracelets) can not be worn.
Reading books
The children take home two reading books - one based on their phonics knowledge and one from the class library to encourage reading for pleasure. The children are expected to read their phonics book more than once as this will help their accuracy and fluency of reading. The library story book can be read to them by their parent/carer. Reading books are changed every Tuesday and Friday. Please help your child to remember to bring their books to school everyday so that we can read with them too. If any books have been lost or damaged please inform the class teacher and make a donation at the office for new books.
Homework
Apart from reading, the children will receive a homework sheet every Friday. This is for children to try at home with your support. They do not need to return this to school unless stated on the sheet.
Celebration Assembly
Every week the whole year group comes together to celebrate their work during the week. Certificates are awarded for great work in Maths, English and for behaviour. We will also celebrate birthdays by singing Happy Birthday to those children who have turned 6 that week. The class with the best attendance will win the shiny, attendance cup! At the end of each half term, children who have attended school every day that half term also get a 100% attendance certificate.
