Autumn 2
Our Learning in Autumn 2
In our second half term there will be lots of exciting learning taking place in Year 4.
In maths, we are continuing our Power Maths learning by moving onto calculating the area and perimeter of regular and irregular shapes. After that we will be learning about mental and written methods for multiplication and division.
In English, we are reading and writing a number of different text types based on fiction and non-fiction books. We will write our own diary entries based on our class book Leon and the Place Between by Angela McAllister. In our reading lessons will will be starting by studying The Train to Impossible Places by P.G. Bell. During these lessons we will practise a range or reading skills including defining new vocabulary, making predictions, drawing on inferences and reading retrieval.
In history, our topic for autumn is the ancient Greeks. We will be able to make a lot of historical comparisons between the two ancient civilisations and compare them both to modern Britain. Additionally, in geography we will be learning about the physical and human geography of modern day Greece to tie in with our history learning.
For design and technology we will be using our textile knowledge to design and test our own ear muffs in the lead up to the winter weather.
For science this half-term, we are learning about sound. By the end of the unit of work pupils should be able to:
- identify how sounds are made, associating some of them with something vibrating
- recognise that vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the ear
- find patterns between the pitch of a sound and features of the object that produced it
- find patterns between the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced it
- recognise that sounds get fainter as the distance from the sound source increase.
In PE, we are continuing our swimming lessons once a week. Pupils are all reminded to ensure that they are bringing their swimming kit including a towel on their swimming day.
Finally, in music we are using the recorders. We will learn a number of new songs and predominantly use B, A, G and E notes to produce our own rhythms.
