Our Learning in Summer 2

In our final half term there will be lots of exciting learning taking place in Year 4. 

In maths, we are continuing our Power Maths learning by moving onto studying statistics, geometry and position and direction. We will also consolidate our learning of time and the four main operations.

In English, we are reading and writing a number of different text types based on fiction and non-fiction books. We will focus on letter writing this half term and will write a letter in the role as an expert on caving. This is based on our book Blue John by Berlie Doherty. In our reading lessons we will also be studying Myth Hunter’s Guide by Tom Button.

In history, we will be doing a local history study. We will cover:

• The typical residents of Manchester around the 1800s.
• Understand the role of the Suffragettes.
• Understand why Abraham Lincoln has a statue in Manchester.
• Study local areas in Manchester of historical significance including Salford Quays.
• Understand why Manchester became such an important city.

Additionally, in geography we will be learning about the local geography of Manchester including:

• Learning to read OS maps using a key and coordinates.
• Understand how land in local Manchester is used.
• Learn how land use in Manchester has changed over time.
• Use the 8 points of the compass.

For design and technology pupils will be creating weather vanes. This will link with the computing unit where pupils will be learning how to record and gather data then present it in graphs.

For science this half-term, we are learning about different habitats and the environment including the impacts of global warming. In this unit pupils will also recap their knowledge of the water cycle.

In art pupils will be studying the work of Pieter Bruegel and Judy Joel. This will help pupils develop their knowledge of perspective and depth when drawing. 

In PE, we are continuing our swimming lessons once a week. Pupils are all reminded to ensure that they are bringing their swimming kit including a towel on their swimming day. 4CC will swim on Tuesdays and 4ML and 4MJ will swim on Thursdays.
