Autumn 1
Our Learning in Autumn 1
In our first half term there will be lots of exciting learning taking place in Year 4.
In maths, we are continuing our Power Maths learning from year 3 and will be looking at place value as well as using mental and written methods for addition and subtraction.
In English, we are reading and writing a number of different text types based on a variety of traditional folktales, poetry and fiction and non-fiction books. We will write our own poetry, persuasive letters and fantasy tales. Books we will be using include Gorilla by Anthony Browne, Alba the Hundred Year Old Fish by Lara Hawthorne and A World Full of Animal Stories: 50 Folktales and Legends by Angela McAllister.
In history, our topic for autumn is the ancient Greeks. We will be able to make a lot of historical comparisons between the two ancient civilisations and compare them both to modern Britain. Additionally, in geography we will be learning about the physical and human geography of modern day Greece to tie in with our history learning. As well as this, we began our design and technology learning by studying Archimedes screw and will be constructing our own.
For science this half-term, we are looking at humans and our digestive system. Initially, we will look at our teeth and their functions as well as how to keep them healthy before learning what happens to our food.
In PE, we are learning about athletics as well as going swimming once a week! Pupils are all reminded to ensure that they are bringing their swimming kit including a towel on their swimming day.
Finally, in music we are using the recorders. We will learn a number of new songs and predominantly use B, A, G and E notes to produce our own rhythms.
