Autumn 2
Our Learning in Autumn 2
In our Read Write Inc lessons, we are learning to read and spell Set 1 and 2 words and beginning to learn Set 3 sounds and words. We are focusing on accuracy and fluency by reading our colour group storybooks more than once during the week. We are improving our writing by writing sentences with punctuation and finger spaces. We are innovating our own ideas based on our storybooks.
In our Pathways to Write lessons, we are exploring Nibbles the Book Monster by Emma Yarlett which is all about a monster who munches his way through some famous stories and ends up changing the plots! During our lessons, we will be learning how to use the conjunction "and", how to use the 1st person (using words like I, me and my) and how to use capital letters for names. We are also continuing to develop our use capital letters at the start of sentences, full stops and finger spaces. We are working towards writing a diary entry in role as Nibbles!
In our Power Maths lessons, we will be learning all about addition and subtraction. We will be using part whole models and writing number sentences to show our understanding of these calculations. We will be using resources such as counters, cubes, ten frames and number lines to help us with our learning. At the end of our unit, we will be able to add and subtract 1 digit numbers.
In Science we are learning about animals, taking inspiration from the great David Attenborough. We will identify and name animal groups such as mammals, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and fish. We will learn about the features of these animal groups such as their habitat and diet. At the end of our learning, we will create a missing poster about an animal, using our knowledge to help identify them.
In Design Technology, we will learn how to make a Catherine Wheel decoration! We will take inspiration from firework displays and explore which fabrics are best to create decorations. We will use our prior knowledge about butt joint sand glue guns to create a solid frame, before using our chosen fabric to complete our design.
In Geography, we are learning about the United Kingdom. We will learn the names of the 4 countries which make up the UK and their capital cities. We will also learn facts about Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III and their roles in ruling the UK.
In Art, we are learning about portraits and different ways of sketching lines and shapes. We will explore different pencil types and practice sketching facial features. Our end of unit outcome will be a self-portrait.
Our Physical Education lessons will focus on gymnastics. We will take inspiration from Simone Biles and learn different ways of moving, balancing and jumping. Our end point will be a gymnastic sequence that shows our new skills in the above areas.
In our Computing lessons we will be developing our mouse skills by using "drag and drop" to organise images of animals into groups - a great link to our Science learning!. We will also be developing our typing skills and begin to use the internet to research safely.
In Music we will be exploring rhythm and pulse through listening to a range of different songs. We will develop our understanding and use of percussion instruments to accompany familiar songs.
In Religious Education lessons we will learn about what Christians believe about God. This unit looks at Christian stories about Jesus and stories that Jesus told.
In our PSHE lessons we will be learning about our feelings and behaviour. We will explore what different feelings can look like and what we can do to help ourselves to feel happy
.
In our P4C (Philosophy for Children) lessons, we will develop our thinking through creating questions based on a range of stimuli including images, stories and objects. Throughout our P4C discussions, we will develop our use of the "4Cs" - being caring, creative, collaborative and critical.
