Our Learning in Spring 2
In our second half term there will be lots of exciting learning taking place in Year 4.
In maths, we are continuing our Power Maths learning by moving onto working with decimals. We will learn about converting between equivalent fractions and decimals, comparing and ordering decimals and reading decimals with digits in the tenths and hundredths columns.
In English, we are reading and writing a number of different text types based on fiction and non-fiction books. We will write our own first person account of When the Giant Stirred by Celia Godkin. In our reading lessons we are reading Ariki and the Island of Wonders by Nicola Davies. During these lessons we will practise a range or reading skills including defining new vocabulary, making predictions, drawing on inferences and reading retrieval.
In history, we are continuing to learn about the ancient Romans. We will be able to make a lot of historical comparisons between the Romans and the Greeks we studied in Autumn. Additionally, in geography we will be learning about Italy. We will study physical features of Italy such as the mountains and Dolomites and human features such as the different cities and regions of Italy.
For design and technology we are researching different types of bread and dough to make our own pizza bases.
For science this half-term, we are learning about states of matter. By the end of the unit of work pupils should be able to: identify and explain the differences between solids, liquids and gasses; report on how physical factors can change states of matter and explain how the water cycle works.
In PE, we are continuing our swimming lessons once a week. Pupils are all reminded to ensure that they are bringing their swimming kit including a towel on their swimming day. 4CC will swim on Tuesdays and 4ML and 4MJ will swim on Thursdays. We will also be learning cricket in school.
Finally, in music we have been learning a range of songs in preparation for the Irish Music Festival. Pupils will have an opportunity to sing some traditional Irish songs, play instruments and learn some dances.
