Our Learning in Summer 2
Summer 2 in Year Two is a dynamic place to be!
In English, we are continuing to make progress by following the Read Write Inc scheme. The focus for many of our children now is to read with fluency for comprehension and understanding. Our children are becoming confident readers and this is showing in them as writer. Children are using their phonics knowledge to spell words and are increasingly able to identify spelling rules. Many of our children now are reading for understanding and writing for different purposes. Children in Year 2 will be innovating the traditional tale of Rumpelstiltskin. We will also go on a pond-dipping trip to Alexandra Park and our children will write a recount about this trip.
In Maths our children have been learning about measure including mass, length, volume and capacity. Our children will learn practically so that they understand, for example, algebraic visual representations. They will also complete a unit on statistics understanding charts and graphs. They will sort categories by their quantities and compare data on block graphs, pictograms and tally charts.
In Science, Year 2 are learning about materials and their properties. We will be building on our knowledge from earlier on this year to test which materials bend, twist, squash or stretch. Using this knowledge, we will test which of these forces release most water. We have read The Enormous Turnip to help us to know the various actions which we will then apply to our tests. We will also revisit vocabulary including opaque, absorbent and rigid.
In Geography, Year 2 will learn to identify the similarities in and differences between the North and South Poles, considering aspects such as weather, the position of the equator and the seasons. Our children will also learn about the features of the coast including the harbour, cliffs, beach and oceans. We will also know how to analyse weather data from the UK and around the world so that we can compare differences in temperature and rainfall.
In Art, Year 2 have been learning about painting plants and flowers, taking inspiration from Georgia O’Keeffe. Our children will explore different images and appraise them, sharing what they like and dislike and giving reasons why. They will learn about how artists compose their paintings, taking inspiration from She Saw the World in a Flower by Gabrielle Balkan. Our children will consider flower paintings by artists including Van Gogh and compare artists’ compositions. The skills of sketching flowers and mixing paints to different shades of yellow will also be experimented with.
In Design Technology we have been looking at baby mobiles. Our children will learn how to make a simple mechanism that balances objects, tilts and moves. We will focus on the moving features on Sirius Black’s mobile. Our children will understand the idea of balance, lifting, levers and tilting. With this knowledge we will be evaluating existing products to see how they are made, conducting simple customer research, making a plan which shows the design and how it will be made and then evaluating how successful the final product is.
Our Physical Education lessons will focus on improving athletics and football skills. For athletics we will be building on our previous knowledge of varying speed for jogging, running and sprinting and applying them to relays and competitions such as World Record. We will also learn how to do a sprint start for a quicker finish time. For football skills, we will revisit skills of using our feet to stop and move a ball, being able to look up at obstacles and down at our feet and being able to strike a ball. The focus will be on team work and collaboration within a sport.
In our Computing lessons we are learning how to create digital images in different programs, including non-paint programs that involve skills of editing the properties of objects and shapes. Our children will research contrasting places using various web browsers and know how to navigate around different websites. Our children will word process a piece of writing to enhance by changing font styles, size and colour. They will also learn that not all information on websites is factual.
In Music our children will understand the graphic notation for a sound and know that different instruments produce different sounds. Our children will work together to compose music using notations and then perform it. We will learn about the Norwegian story, Peer Gynt and then listen to Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite, applying our knowledge of appraisal to this inspirational music.
In Religious Education, Year 2 children will continue to learn about teachings from the Abrahamic religions through stories and parables including Jonah and The Black Stone. We will also compare the similarities and the differences between the teachings from the Torah and Bible.
In PSHE our children will be learning financial education. They will learn about prices of items at a garden centre, different jobs at the local garden centre, the skills needed for the various jobs there, they will interview one another for vacancies and then they will do a garden centre role play where a variety of customers come into the garden centre for different reasons.
